Montreal, October 12, 2006 – The pencils are sharpened, the desks are arranged and Douglas experts are ready to teach. In less than one week, the Douglas Hospitals’ Mini-Psych school is ready to open its doors. More than 230 registered students will be taught about the inner workings of the brain. Here they will discover the difference between OCD, ADHD and PTSD; hear about new treatments for depression and other mental illnesses; and learn about uncommon ailments such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

“We are very excited about this new program,” says Douglas Chief of Psychiatry, Mimi Israel MD, who is overseeing the program. “Although graduates of the Mini-Psych School, won’t be able to prescribe medications, they will have a better understanding of mental illnesses and will be able to make informed decisions. Approximately one quarter of the population is affected by these disorders. Increased understanding and awareness of the issues is essential to help these individuals function in society.”

Mini-Psych School runs for six-consecutive Wednesday evenings and each lecture will build on the previous one. The lectures will be taught by some of the Douglas’ leading researchers and clinicians who are also animated speakers. The lecture topics will cover material that is taught in psychology or psychiatry classes. For example, the second course, From the unformed to the unstable mind: Child and adolescent psychiatry, will discuss adolescent mood disorders and the difference between normal teen angst and severe depression. Other topics include adult and geriatric psychiatry and how your brain works.

“The Mini-Psych School is an excellent way to share expertise and knowledge. These sessions will not only be informative, but also a fun experience for the teachers and students,” says Mimi Israel. “Through bringing together experts in the fields of Psychology and Psychiatry with members from the community, the Mini-Psych school will provide easily accessible information about the brain, how it works and what happens when it doesn’t.”

Space is limited for Mini-Psych School and registration is required. Enrolment information is available on line at www.douglas.qc.ca.
