Mr. Daniel Mercier, Honourary President of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute Foundation’s 10th Annual Golf Tournament, and Hewlett Packard’s Vice President, Eastern Canada, announced September 17th to the 120 attendees at the Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club that the event raised $100,000 to benefit the Douglas Institute. The Douglas Institute Foundation raises funds for treating mental illness. The Douglas Institute believes that the best outcome for people suffering from mental illness can only be achieved by closely integrating care, teaching and research.

Over 30 Montreal corporations were present further demonstrating that mental illness in the workplace is finally coming out of the closet. Camillo Zacchia, PhD., Chief of Psychology of the Douglas Institute surprised the participants with the following shocking statistics regarding mental illness. ‘1% of the population has Schizophrenia, 40% of those suffering from Schizophrenia attempt suicide during their life; 5-6% succeed. This suicide rate is 100 times greater than the suicide rate of the general population. Even more surprising is that there are 5 times more people with Schizophrenia than Multiple Sclerosis, and 6 times more people with Schizophrenia than Juvenile Onset or Type I Diabetes.’

Jane Lalonde, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Douglas Institute Foundation, launched the Institute’s first Annual Report on Giving, “Helping Us Help You” and announced that the Foundation gave the Douglas Institute $1.388 million towards care, teaching and research in 2006-2007. “The Douglas may have the second largest neuroscience and mental health research center in Canada,” said Jane, “the Douglas Institute may have the most successful grant application record of any medical research team in Canada, and be designated by the Government as the only Institute for Mental Health in Montreal, yet, we struggle to keep our most talented scientists and doctors here to support their ever more complex and sophisticated research on the brain. So, what difference does your donation make? Your donation helps the Douglas attract and retain the most talented scientists and doctor worldwide, to work on the most promising research, so that mental illness can be prevented and cured. Thank You.”

Many prizes were awarded to the delight of the golfers. The winners of the best team awards were: Microserv’s Jean-François and Yves Cabana, and Hewlett Packard’s Daniel Mercier and Mike Quinn. Mike Quinn also won the Beat the Pro contest. The tournament ended with a lively auction when the most sought after raffle prize, a luxury suite for 12 people, at the Bell Centre for Cirque du Soleil’s upcoming show called Saltimbanco, was donated back by the winner and was auctioned off for an additional $4,200.
