The Douglas Mental Health University Institute is proud to announce that its director of Professional and Hospital Services, Jean-Bernard Trudeau, MD, was elected president of the Quebec Medical Association on April 21 for a two-year mandate.

The Quebec Medical Association is a non-union organization composed of almost 9,000 general practitioners, specialists, medical residents, and medical students. Its mission is to bring together and support Quebec doctors, in order to guarantee quality health services to Quebec’s population.

“Jean-Bernard Trudeau is an exceptional physician and an undisputed leader in the area of health administration,” says Jacques Hendlisz, Douglas Institute director general. “We are extremely proud of his accomplishments and their impact on the Douglas Institute. We extend our warmest congratulations in regards to this nomination."

The Douglas’ director of Professional and Hospital Services since 2003, Jean-Bernard Trudeau previously held positions at the Centre hospitalier Pierre-Janet, the CLSC de Hull and the Centre hospitalier de la Vallée de l’Outaouais. Jean-Bernard Trudeau is particularly interested in crisis intervention and community psychiatric follow-up for clients who are vulnerable and involved with the legal system. His services as a medical expert have been called upon in several significant projects—notably for the Centre de coordination nationale des urgences and for the committee of experts on the organization of mental health services. More recently, he chaired a major initiative for the Office des professions du Québec, together with many experts from various professions, concerning the modernization of professional practices in mental health and human relations.

Key positions held by Jean-Bernard Trudeau have included member of the board of directors, president of the Council of Physicians, Dentists and Pharmacists (CPDP) Association, and vice-president and president of the Conseil de la santé et du bien-être du Québec. He serves on the board of the Collège des médecins du Québec and is chair of its peer review committee. He is also a medical surveyor for the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. Jean-Bernard Trudeau has served on the QMA Board of Directors since 2003, and sits on the board of directors of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). He has also contributed to the Resolutions Committee of the CMA General Council.

"In carrying out this mandate and the interventions that will be required of me, I intend to pay special attention to the integral values of professionalism,” declared Jean-Bernard Trudeau. “I firmly believe that this type of professionalism remains one of our greatest resources for practising quality medicine with strength and humanity. In my view, the values of professionalism should be reinforced in the governance of the healthcare network, at all levels of the system.”
