The inpatient unit offers specialized short-term services (typically 90 days in duration) to people aged 65 and over with a severe major neurocognitive disorder (MND) accompanied by behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Its aim is to stabilize the person’s condition using state-of-the-art pharmacological and psychosocial approaches and facilitate a successful return home. The unit also provides support for loved ones, as well as consultation services for community partners and organizations. Admission may occur via transfer from a general hospital (short-term), a residential and long-term care centre (CHSLD), or a supported living environment within the CIUSSS ODIM.

  • Observation of BPSD
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Therapeutic activities aimed at reducing BPSD
  • Mental health education for the person and their loved ones

The team consists of geriatric psychiatrists, general practitioners, nurses, patient attendants, social workers, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, specialized educators, administrative staff and consultations, as needed, with pharmacists, nutritionists, and infection control.
