Alternatives to Hospitalization and Community-Based Services

To help people avoid hospitalization or the need for follow-up at the hospital, the Institute offers alternatives to hospitalization and provides services in the community.  These services play a key role in the Institute’s academic mission by engaging in research initiatives that contribute to the development of new knowledge and practices.  They also support the Institute’s teaching activities by offering internships and workshops.

Alternatives to Hospitalization

In 2024, in response to the 2022–2026 Interministerial Mental Health Action Plan, the Institute began implementing three alternative approaches to traditional hospitalization: brief community-based support, brief intensive home treatment, and the Psychiatric Brief Intervention Unit.

Community-Based Services

Community-based services take place offsite. The teams provide psychosis prevention, assertive community treatment, and intensive case management.
