The IUBP provides specialized services to adults aged 18 and over experiencing significant mental health instability and requiring high-intensity acute care. Its primary goal is to quickly stabilize the individual’s condition in a safe hospital setting through a short stay, typically lasting between 48 to 96 hours.

This short-term hospitalization can help prevent a traditional inpatient admission while maintaining the individual’s connection to their living environment and community.

Admission requires a referral from the Douglas Institute’s Psychiatric Emergency Department.

Services include:

  • Stabilisation
  • Assessments
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Crisis intervention
  • Psychoeducation for the individual and their loved ones
  • Discharge planning and support
  • Coordination and liaison to ensure continuity of care with partner services

The team consists of nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, addiction and substance use specialists, and patient care attendants.
