Sismotherapy treatment, also known as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or electroshock therapy, is a neurostimulation procedure used in psychiatry. Performed under general anesthesia, it involves triggering a convulsive seizure by applying an electric current to the skull using electrodes. This treatment is used for certain psychiatric and neurological conditions, such as major depressive disorders.
A referral from a psychiatrist is required to access treatment. The person must be actively engaged in mental health services.
The team consists of psychiatrists, anesthetists, nurses and respiratory therapists.
