Eating Disorder Program Hosts Event for Families and Loved Ones
On March 10, 2026, the Eating Disorders Program (EDP) at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute organized an in-person event for loved ones of individuals living with eating disorders. Free and open to the public, the event was destined for anyone interested or concerned about this issue. Its goal was to provide information, practical resources, and opportunities for attendees to connect in a supportive environment.
Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, can affect individuals from all walks of life. Parents, other family members, partners, and friends often play a vital role in supporting the recovery process. However, this involvement can come with many challenges.
Presentation, testimonial, and discussions with EDP experts
The program began with a presentation by the psychologist, researcher, and head of research and academic development at the EDP, Dr. Linda Booij. She addressed common misconceptions and scientific facts about eating disorders, as well as treatments available in Quebec. The session continued with a moving testimonial from a former patient at the EDP, offering a more personal perspective on the recovery journey. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask the former patient questions. The event concluded with a panel of eating disorder experts from the EDP, who answered attendees’ questions.
About 70 participants registered for the event. They had the opportunity to listen, learn, and ask questions to both the person who shared their experience and the eating disorder experts, moments of exchange that were greatly appreciated. Feedback highlighted a strong demand for future events for loved ones of people with eating disorders.
The next event in the series, scheduled for June, will continue to address the unique needs of carers and other loved ones of individuals with eating disorders. Through this initiative, the EDP hopes to continue providing meaningful support to everyone whose life is affected by eating disorders.
